Elizabeth Holmes

Elizabeth Holmes is a Managing Attorney at Karam Law. Elizabeth handles a variety of cases in the litigation, asylum, and family-based areas of immigration law – including citizenship and relief from deportation.

As a senior attorney with over 20 years of experience, Elizabeth represents clients before the Executive Office of Immigration Review and the U.S. Court of Appeals. She also guides clients through the process of fling for asylum and other humanitarian-based applications or petitions.

Elizabeth is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court of Minnesota, and the 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 9th Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Elizabeth obtained her Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota and obtained her Bachelor of Arts from Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Marit Gurley

Marit Gurley is a Managing Attorney with Karam Law. She engages in firm operations management, leads the firm’s business immigration practice, and manages immigration matters for employers ranging from Fortune 100 to start-up companies. Marit assists clients in obtaining temporary and permanent immigration status, develops corporate immigration policies and procedures, and conducts compliance training for employers. Aside from her business immigration practice, Marit also represents victims of labor trafficking and applicants for adjustment of status and naturalization.

Marit has always been interested in learning about other cultures and new languages. She became particularly excited about working in the field of U.S. immigration law after her time studying abroad in both Spain and Ecuador.

Marit graduated magna cum laude from the University of St. Thomas School of Law, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2012. She graduated magna cum laude from Augustana University, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 2009. She received her undergrad degree in Business / Communications and Spanish, and a minor in Journalism. During undergrad, Marit studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador and Salamanca, Spain.

As an advocate for mentorship, Marit has volunteered as a mentor for the University of St. Thomas School of Law, The Advocates for Human Rights, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Matthew Woodward

Matt Woodward is a dedicated advocate for his clients in a wide range of complex immigration matters. Matt helps families stay together, reunite, and grow by providing immigration solutions based on family relationships. Matt also helps employers meet their need for qualified employees and highly skilled professionals by providing solutions for temporary and permanent immigration status based on employment. He also handles naturalization, asylum, and other forms of humanitarian relief.

Matt began his career in immigration law with Karam in 2004, as a receptionist and later a paralegal. Matt left Karam to serve as a rural health volunteer in El Salvador from 2006-2008. After completing his service, he returned to Karam and resumed his work as a paralegal. Matt’s experience in the Peace Corps informs his service-oriented approach to the practice of law. Matt is a fluent Spanish speaker, and he delights in every opportunity he has to learn about his client’s cultures, customs and traditions.

Matt obtained his JD from Hamline University in 2012. At Hamline, Matt sat on the board of the Hamline Journal of Law and Public Policy. His article, License to Violate the Constitution, discussing widespread constitutional violations and healthcare failures in immigration detention facilities, was published in the 2010-2011 edition. Matt received his Bachelor’s in English Literature from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Matt is an active member of AILA, previously serving on various committees and as a Track Manager for a regional conference. Matt has provided pro bono services and mentorship to the Advocates for Human Rights, the Volunteer Lawyers Network, and the Immigrant Law Center.

Allison Wells

A Senior Attorney at Karam Law, Alli focuses her practice on corporate immigration matters, representing employers and foreign workers navigating the complex process of gaining work authorization in the United States. She advises clients nationwide on the availability of new employment-based immigration opportunities (permanent and temporary), the immigration impact of corporate change, and regulatory compliance (I-9 and E-Verify policies and audits).

Alli’s immigration expertise includes nonimmigrant visas, such as the L-1A/B for employees of multinational corporations, H-1B for specialty workers, TN for NAFTA professionals, and O-1 for individuals with extraordinary abilities, as well as the associated statuses for family members. In addition, Alli assists employers sponsoring their workers for permanent residence (green card) through the PERM Labor Certification Process, National Interest Waivers, and the EB-1C category for Multinational Managers and Executives. Alli also counsels clients on obtaining an EB-1A first preference classification as individuals with extraordinary ability, and regularly advises employers on CPT/OPT/STEM OPT rules for student workers and how to best navigate the immigration system to retain up-and-coming talent.

Prior to joining Karam Law, Alli practiced in the area of employment-based immigration law with another firm in Minneapolis. In her free time, Alli enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, volunteering at her church, being outdoors, and cheering on Marquette NCAA Basketball.

Alexis Dutt

After studying English, writing, and Spanish at Drury University, Alexis came to law school with the goal of using her license to help individuals and their families navigate the complexities of the legal system and feel safe and secure. While at the University of Minnesota Law School, she spent a week at the southern border providing pro bono in immigration detention facilities with asylum-seekers. After that, she knew that a career in immigration was her path. Shortly after this, Alexis joined Karam Law in 2016.

During school, she was a certified student attorney in the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic of the James H. Binger Center for New Americans. Alexis was involved in litigation efforts contesting the Travel Ban as well as the class action law suit for the Somali 92, which included another trip to the border. She has argued before the U.S. District Court of Minnesota and the Eighth Circuit. Alexis graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2018, where she was on the Dean’s list and graduated with the Immigration Concentration.

Today, Alexis has a broad immigration practice, focusing on working with families and those seeking humanitarian and family-based relief throughout the immigration process, from application to appeal. Alexis practices before USCIS, immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, U.S. District Court, and the Circuit Courts of Appeal.

Alexis is licensed in Minnesota, and is admitted to practice before the Executive Office of Immigration Review, the Eighth and Second Circuits, the District Court of Minnesota, and the Western District of Wisconsin. She speaks Spanish.

She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, where she has served as the chair of the Upper Midwest Annual Conference and is one of the current Fort Snelling Immigration Court Liaisons for the AILA Minnesota-Dakotas chapter.

Alexis volunteers with the Advocates for Human Rights, particularly enjoying mentoring non immigration attorneys who are providing pro bono services for asylum and immigration court matters.

She has provided continuing legal education presentations on various topics, including bond hearings, federal litigation, and humanitarian asylum. Alexis is grateful for the mentorship and guidance she received during her education from practicing attorneys; because of this, she principally loves working with and presenting to students.

Enes Demirel

Enes is an Associate Attorney at Karam Law. As an immigrant himself, Enes brings a unique passion and understanding to his work, enabling him to connect with clients on a personal level and provide compassionate legal services.

Enes focuses on a wide range of complex immigration matters and represents both individual and business clients in courts and before government agencies. His expertise spans a wide range of U.S. immigration matters, including nonimmigrant visas (H-1B, H-2B, E-3, TN, L-1A, L-1B, O-1, and R-1), permanent labor certification, employment-based preference (EB-1, EB-2, EB-3, and EB-4), family-based preference visas (F1, F2A, F2B, F3, and F4), permanent residence, citizenship, asylum, and humanitarian-based applications. Enes also collaborates with senior attorneys to represent clients before the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), the Administrative Appeals Office (AAO), and Federal Courts.

Enes earned his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Fatih University Law School in Istanbul, Turkey. During his time in law school, Enes gained valuable experience in an immigration law field placement with the Advocates for Human Rights. There, he worked closely with low-income clients to prepare their asylum applications and supported staff and volunteer attorneys by conducting supplemental research on complex immigration issues.

Licensed to practice law in the State of New York, Enes is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). Enes served as a co-chair of the 2023 Upper Midwest Immigration Law Conference jointly presented by the Minnesota/Dakotas Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Advocates for Human Rights.

Lauren Lowry

Lauren Lowry has been with Karam Law since 2020. She has always been interested in learning about different cultures and became particularly interested in immigration law after the Latin American studies classes she took in undergrad, some of which involved volunteering with the local immigrant population.

Lauren graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2022 with an Immigration Concentration. During school, she was a certified student attorney in the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic of the James H. Binger Center for New Americans, president of the Minnesota Justice Foundation, and a student instructor for Civil Rights Civil Liberties Moot Court. During her time in the Federal Immigration Litigation clinic, Lauren wrote and filed a petition for writ of certiorari before the Supreme Court. Before law school, Lauren graduated with distinction from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota where she received degrees in Marketing, Entrepreneurial Management, and Spanish. Lauren is admitted to the Minnesota bar and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Her pro bono work includes helping Afghan refugees apply for asylum here in the United States.
